2008 Grants

In 2008 the Conservation Alliance awarded $900,000 in grants to 34 organizations.

Adirondack Council (Elizabethtown, NY) $30,000.00
The work of the Adirondack Council ensures the ecological integrity and wild character of the Adirondack Park. The Adirondack Park Additions Program received funding for the work to acquire and protect up to 200,000 acres of forested wilderness in New York's Adirondack Park.
Alaska Wilderness League (Washington, DC) $35,000.00
Alaska Wilderness League leads the effort to preserve Alaska's Wilderness. This grant helps fund the Protect America's Arctic Campaign to defend key places in America's Arctic from oil and gas development.
American Rivers (Washington, DC) $20,000.00
Founded in 1973, American Rivers works to protect and restore our nation's rivers. Our grant is to support the North Cascades Wild and Scenic Rivers Campaign to permanently protect 250 miles of rivers in the North Cascades Mountains.
American Whitewater (Cullowhee, NC) $25,000.00
American Whitewater works to conserve and restore America's whitewater resources and to enhance opportunities to enjoy them safely. Our funding supports American Whitewater's Colorado Stewardship Program to protect and restore water flows in streams throughout Colorado.
Appalachian Trail Conservancy (Harpers Ferry, WV) $25,000.00
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is dedicated to the preservation and management of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. Conservation Alliance funding supports the Rocky Fork Tract Acquisition to acquire and protect the 10,000-acre Rocky Fork tract in eastern Tennessee.
Audubon Alaska (Anchorage, AK) $30,000.00
Audubon Alaska focuses on the conservation of Alaska's natural ecosystems with emphasis on wildlife and habitat. Our funding supports the Alaska Conservation Program, to protect key Alaska wildlands including the Tongass National Forest and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
California Wilderness Coalition (Oakland, CA) $30,000.00
California Wilderness Coalition works to protect the natural landscapes of California. The Southern California and Eastern Sierra Wilderness Campaign received funding to secure Wilderness protection for up to 1.4 million acres of public land in the Southern California Desert and Eastern Sierra Nevada.
Campaign to Save Roan Plateau (Carbondale, CO) $20,000.00
The Campaign to Save Roan Plateau is committed to securing lasting protection for the undeveloped public lands on Colorado's Roan Plateau. Our grant supports CSRP's efforts to protect the Roan Plateau from oil and gas development.
Canadian Parks & Wilderness Society (Ottawa, ON) $30,000.00
Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society has a bold conservation vision of permanently protecting one half of Canada's public lands, freshwater and ocean environments. This grant supports CPAWS' Nahanni Forever Campaign to protect the 7-million-acre South Nahanni River Watershed in Canada's Northwest Territories.
Cascade Land Conservancy (Seattle, WA) $30,000.00
Cascade Land Conservancy works to protect and steward the Northwest's precious land resources. Our grant supports the group's Boulder Falls Campaign to purchase a parcel of land on the Boulder River, currently proposed as the site for a new hydroelectric dam.
Central Oregon LandWatch (Bend, OR) $30,000.00
Central Oregon LandWatch engages the community in effective land use planning and enforces land use and environmental laws and codes. The Metolius Campaign received funding to protect the Metolius River from the negative impacts of large-scale destination resort development.
Colorado Mountain Club (Carbondale, CO) $20,000.00
The oldest outdoor organization in Colorado, the Colorado Mountain Club brings together energy, interest and knowledge to educate and encourage land preservation. We funded CMC's ORV Management Plan campaign to secure a network of non-motorized recreation designations on public lands throughout Colorado.
Conservation Northwest (Bellingham, WA) $25,000.00
Conservation Northwest protects and connects old-growth forests and other wild areas from the Washington coast to the BC Rockies. We supported CNW's Columbia Highlands Initiative to protect 350,000 acres of public land in Washington State's Colville and eastern Okanogan National Forests.
Environmental Defense Center (Santa Barbara, CA) $13,000.00
The Environmental Defense Center protects and enhances the local environment through education, advocacy and legal action. Our funding of the Naples Preservation Project will help to protect the fragile landscape, habitats and recreational resources of Naples, a broad, undeveloped coastal terraces on the Central California coast from development.
Greater Yellowstone Coalition (Bozeman, MT) $30,000.00
Greater Yellowstone Coalition works to protect the lands, waters and wildlife of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. We funded GYC's Wyoming Range Campaign to protect the 1.2-million acre Wyoming Range from proposed oil and gas development.
Idaho Conservation League (Boise, ID) $20,000.00
Idaho Conservation League works to protect and preserve clean water, clean air and wilderness in Idaho. Our grant supports the Boulder-White Clouds Wilderness Campaign to protect 320,000 acres of public land in the mountains of Central Idaho.
Montana Wilderness Association (Helena, MT) $30,000.00
Montana Wilderness Association celebrates 50 years of protecting Montana's special places. We funded the Beaverhead-Deerlodge Wilderness Campaign to secure Wilderness protection for 570,000 acres of public land in Montana's Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest.
Northeast Wilderness Trust (Boston, MA) $30,000.00
Northeast Wilderness Trust works to preserve a wild future for all species. We funded the Piscataquis Preserve Project to conserve 1,200 acres of habitat in Atkinson, Maine.
Northern Alaska Environmental Center (Fairbanks, AK) $30,000.00
The Northern Alaska Environmental Center promotes conservation of the environment in Interior and Arctic Alaska. We funded NAEC's Yukon Flats Refuge Campaign to protect three areas in Alaska's Yukon from oil development.
Oregon Natural Desert Association (Bend, OR) $30,000.00
Oregon Natural Desert Association works to protect, defend, and restore the health of Oregon's native deserts. Our grant supports the group's Badlands Wilderness Campaign to secure Wilderness designation for 30,000 acres of desert wildlands in Central Oregon.
Oregon Wild (Portland, OR) $30,000.00
Oregon Wild has worked since 1974 to protect and restore Oregon's wildlands, wildlife and waters. The Mount Hood Wilderness Campaign + Additional Wilderness efforts were funded to permanently protect 125,000 acres of land and 80 miles of rivers on Oregon's Mount Hood, and protect the proposed Soda Mountain and Copper Salmon Wilderness areas.
Rivers Without Borders (Juneau, AK) $25,000.00
Rivers Without Borders works to maintain and restore the diversity and abundance of fish and wildlife species and their habitat in the transboundary watersheds of Canada and Southeast Alaska. Our funding of the Taku Watershed Campaign helps support their effort to protect the Taku River watershed from the proposed Tulsequah Chief mine.
Rocky Mountain Wild (Durango, CO) $20,000.00
Colorado Wild works to protect, preserve, and restore the native plants and wildlife of the Southern Rocky Mountains. Our grant supports the group's effort to preserve critical habitat from large real estate development at Wolf Creek Pass.
Southeast Alaska Conservation Council (Juneau, AK) $30,000.00
Southeast Alaska Conservation Council focuses on the protection of the prime old-growth forest of Southeast Alaska. The Tongass Wilderness Campaign received a grant to protect up to 4.5 million acres in the Tongass National Forest of Southeast Alaska.
Southern Appalachian Forest Coalition (Asheville, NC) $30,000.00
The Southern Appalachian Forest Coalition works to protect and restore the wildlands, water, native forests, and ecosystems of the Southern Appalachian landscape. We funded SAFC's Tennessee Wilderness Campaign to protect nearly 18,000 acres of public land in the Cherokee National Forest.
Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (Salt Lake City, UT) $25,000.00
Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance works for the preservation of the outstanding wilderness at the heart of the Colorado Plateau. The San Rafael Swell Wilderness Campaign works to protect the Wilderness-quality lands of Southern Utah's San Rafael Swell.
Trout Unlimited Alaska (Juneau, AK) $30,000.00
Trout Unlimited works to protect and restore wild salmon and trout populations throughout Alaska. Our grant supports TU's Pebble Mine Campaign to protect the Bristol Bay watershed from a proposed open-pit gold-copper mine in the bay's headwaters.
Trust for Public Land/Pinnacles Fund (Montpelier, VT) $30,000.00
Appalachian Mountain Club and The Trust for Public Land are collaborating on the Mahoosuc Conservation Campaign. This grant supports their partnership to protect key natural and recreational areas in the 600,000-acre Mahoosuc region of New Hampshire and Maine.
Utah Rivers Council (Salt Lake City, UT) $25,000.00
Utah Rivers Council works to protect and restore Utah's rivers and clean water sources for today and tomorrow. We funded the Utah Wild and Scenic Rivers Campaign to secure Wild & Scenic status for streams in 17 river systems in Utah.
WaterWatch of Oregon (Portland, OR) $25,000.00
WaterWatch protects and restores natural stream flows in Oregon's rivers. We funded the group's Free the Rogue Campaign which seeks to remove Savage Rapids Dam and other barriers that, once removed, will allow fish passage and river recreation on Oregon's Rogue River.
West Virginia Wilderness Coalition (Morgantown, WV) $25,000.00
West Virginia Wilderness Coalition works to protect special places on public lands in West Virginia . We funded WVWC's Wild Monongahela Wilderness Campaign to protect more than 70,000 acres of public land in the Monongahela National Forest.
Wild Fish Conservancy (Duvall, WA) $12,000.00
The Wild Fish Conservancy is dedicated to the recovery and conservation of the regions wild fish ecosystems. Our funding of the Icicle Creek Dam Removal will support the eventual approval to remove two dams on Icicle Creek, which drains the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in Washington.
Wilderness Support Center (Durango, CO) $30,000.00
The Wilderness Support Center works to protect wilderness and inspire Americans to care for our wild places. The San Juan Mountains Wilderness Campaign will permanently protect 210,000 acres of federal land in Southern Colorado's San Juan Mountains.
Winter Wildlands Alliance (Boise, ID) $30,000.00
Winter Wildlands Alliance promotes and protects winter wildlands and quality human-powered snowsports experience on public lands. Our grant will help the Quiet Recreation Campaigns in Wyoming, Montana, and Oregon to protect winter ecosystems and quality human-powered winter recreation in Wyoming, Montana, and Oregon.
