The Nevada Wilderness Project was founded in 1999 with the mission to save the state's most spectacular, rugged and imperiled public lands in Nevada as permanent wilderness, the strongest protection possible under federal law. The Project has a nimble and entrepreneurial staff of eight with a focus on results-oriented activism. Since our founding, we have spearheaded four extremely successful campaigns, designating more than 2.5 million new wilderness acres and 500,000 acres of National Conservation Areas (the equivalent of 2.5 Rhode Islands!).

The Conservation Alliance supports our efforts in southern Nevada to protect the largest wildlife refuge in the lower 48 contiguous states--the Desert National Wildlife Refuge.  Just north of the neon of Las Vegas, the refuge is a 1.6 million-acre refuge that has some of the largest unroaded desert landscapes in the nation.
